Building the function

There was no marketing function. We built one.

The situation

Excellent Webworld is one of the companies I worked inside full-time, and the situation was the one I now see constantly from the outside: a capable development business growing on referrals, with no marketing function and no plan for building one.

Starting from nothing is a different problem from fixing something broken. There is no baseline, no team, no process, and every early decision compounds.

The work

What I actually did

01

Positioning before activity

Worked out what the firm was genuinely the best choice for before spending anything on promoting it — the step most firms skip and pay for later.

02

Organic as the foundation

Built search and content as the base layer, because it compounds and does not stop working when the budget pauses.

03

Hiring and structure

Recruited and trained the team, defined who owned what, and set up the reporting rhythm so the work survived any one person leaving.

04

Exhibitions as a channel

Introduced trade shows properly — choosing the right events, preparing before travelling, and running follow-up in the fortnight afterwards where the value actually sits.

What changed

  • A marketing function that existed, was staffed, and ran to a plan.
  • Organic search as a durable lead source alongside referrals.
  • Exhibitions run as a measured channel rather than an annual gamble.
Confidentiality

This was a full-time role rather than a consulting engagement. Commercial detail remains confidential.
